Flygskam (Flight-shaming)
This environmental movement grew strong in the wake of Greta Thunberg´s campaign for a better culture. It wants travelers to stop flying to reduce the CO2 emission. Swedes fly 7 times more than average global citizens but the total CO2 emissions have fallen by 24% since 1990. Unfortunately air traffic has grown meanwhile by more than 60%.The idea of flight-shaming is to make people feel ashamed to fly since it has such a negative impact on the world and our climate. Researchers and prominent people have agreed that flying is wrong and have cut down on flying. They have stopped taking off and have started taking in – the truth.
Hen
This kind of hen does not lay many eggs. No, this is a new gender-neutral personal pronoun. It can be used instead of the words hon (she) and han (he). Instead of writing “I don’t know where he or she is” you could write “I don’t know where hen is,” indicating that you don’t care whether it is a he or a she, or merely because you are lazy. “I have a friend. Do you know hen?”
Jordgubbar (Strawberries)
Swedish summers include herring, which is not popular among everyone, but also strawberries, which is popular among everyone. As for strawberries there is one must. They have to be Swedish. In average Swedes consume 40 million liters, about 4 – 5 liters per person (including new-born babies and people older than 100 years. They (not the babies or oldies) are sold along roads and streets on temporary tables or in supermarkets until late July or early August. The exact meaning of the word is “jord” (earth or dirt) and “gubbar” (old men). Who said that Swedish is a normal language?
#MeToo
#MeToo hit Sweden like a sledgehammer. Women all over the country organized meetings and discussions. Soon the biggest Swedish women’s movement since the early 1900s involved women from show business, the arts, clergy, military, law, media, sports and politics. By the end of this tidal wave, even the illustrious Swedish Academy was shaking in its foundations after allegations about sexual harassment by the spouse of one of the Academy members. This led to the announcement that there would be no Nobel Prize for Literature in 2018 due to the scandal. Adding to that, members left the Academy. New ones now sit on their numbered chairs (1-18).
